portfolio review
part 1- portfolios
1. Alyssa Schuker
2. Photos were mainly portraits, with a few action shots
3.The tone was very dark, she used the same lens, the story of the eating disorder isn't original
4.One liked the picture with the man sweeping, liked how in the girl with the hurdles you could only see the legs of her opponent.
5. I did not like the first "story" because it didn't look like a good photograph, the others I didn't mind much. There were a couple interesting, good photos, ( the man sweeping and the kids in the stairway) and I liked most of the portfolio but overall I didn't see any cohesion and conistance in techniques or style, it felt like many different photographers took these photos.
1.Travis Haughton
2. portraits and sport shots
3.thought some photos were "too tight", were bored of the children photos, hated picture of a sign
4. they liked the "wierdness" of the photo at the circus, liked the levels of the gymnastics picture
5. My overall impression was that he took some interesting photos, his quality is all over the place were some don't seem to be edited and some look over edited. The story was cute and the photos were interesting, but I didn't really feel much emotion looking at them. Some portraits were very interesting to me, like the circus photo. Others were boring, like the photo of the kid in the mask.
1.Nick Adams
2. photo j, sports, portraits, people, art
3. thought some photos were out of focus, tired of seeing photos of kids with disabilities (" we are not going to learn anything new"), tired of seeing silhouette photos
4. liked the meaning of the first image, liked the photo with the man jumping in the dark as an art piece
5. Overall, I was split, some portraits had some good meanings and were nice to look at, some were boring and didn't make much sense. I liked that there was no story, I thought that it made it feel like a collection and wasn't forcing anything. I did not like how busy some of the photos are, it distracted my eye and was not pleasing to look at.
1. Sam Adams
2. sport, people, art-sy,
3. tired of silhouette photos, the photo with the duck "didn't do anything" for the strength of the portfolio, tired of firefighter photos
4. liked the mystery of the one with the running monk, liked the photo of the soccer girls (thought it was a usable photo)
5. I thought it was an ok portfolio, the story didn't make any sense but some individual pictures were good. I did not like how the photographer placed himself, he needed to change the place were he shot just a little bit. The story didn't make sense, there was no "central character" or theme, just some ok action shots.
part 2- winning portfolio
1. strengths- color composition, tightness, likes view point of photographer, interesting composition
2. I saw that he had strong viewpoints and angles, the composition was meaningful and interesting, and that his photo were nice to look at with good quality. I see some small weakness in sports quality but not much else.
part 3 - contest recap
1. Judges look at their favorite portfolios, if they don't like it its out but they argue and debate to which one they believe is the best, in the end it comes down to how neat the portfolio is, if the composition is engaging, and is edited to perfection.
