Magazines Part II

1. Image Based
Image based covers are basically covers with a photo as the background. Fashion magazines normally have either one or a couple of people in them. More than ever, they will use a famous person to get more sales. Travel magazines will take photos of landscapes or hotels, each industry will use a photo that relates to their topic. Using a photograph is the most popular type of cover.

2. Illustration Based
Using illustrations for magazine covers started in the 20's, this form of cover lets the magazine get creative in what they want to portray.  They could be used for comical, political, etc. and are now a days generated on a computer screen. Not many magazines choose to have an illustration as a cover.

3. Type Based
Type based covers are not commonly used, but when they are they are bold powerful. Using type is risky and to make it meaningful you should use different colors or fonts that stick out and are interesting to look at. Sometimes, a photo doesn't quite capture the message the magazine is trying to present.

4. Concept Based
Concept based covers are a mixture of all three other types of photos and are very effective. The trick is to have an easily understandable cover so reader will get the message and react to it. This norm is normally used with business, political and independent magazines and can be used to be comical, and witty.

What is the relationship between words and photos on magazine covers and why is it important?

The photos are normally about the main subject or story the magazine is telling and the words reassure what is in the photo. Words can also help the reader understand what is happening in the photo. If this relationship didn't exist, readers wouldn't know what they are getting or think that a magazine was unreliable.
